The design for this necklace can be traced to Celtic prehistory. The crescent moon motif evolved through Spanish history, was brought to the new world by Spanish explorers and is now recognizable as the "Naja", the central element of a Navajo Squash Blossom necklace. Penannular means "almost a circle". This type of brooch has been used in one form or the other for hundreds of years by Scottish highlanders to hold their woven tartans in place.
